| IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work in the country, where English is used as the language of communication. It is readily available at various test centers across India. These tests centers run regular test administrations, according to local need and results are available within two weeks. The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), The British Council and IDP Education Australia jointly manage the IELTS.
The test shows the overall ability as well as the performance of the test taker in listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is an option of either Academic or General Training Reading and Writing Modules. Academic training is suitable for candidates planning to undertake higher education study. General Training is suitable for candidates planning to undertake non-academic training or work experience, or for immigration purposes.
Most Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions accept IELTS. American academic institutions are increasingly accepting IELTS for admission. IELTS is accepted by many professional organizations including the New Zealand Immigration Service, the Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, the Australian Medical Council, the UK General Medical Council and the UK Ministry of Defense.
